As good as it was as an airliner and a freighter, the Boeing 727 is arguably an even better private jet. Fast, comfortable and unmistakably stylish, a private Boeing 727 is ideal for those with the need to travel long distances quickly, comfortably and reliably. It can safely operate on runways as short as 4,500 feet and, thanks to its high-flotation tires and high mounted engines, the Boeing 727 can even operate from gravel or dirt strips.
With its T-tail and signature tri-engine configuration, the Boeing 727 is an icon of commercial aviation. Introduced into service in 1963, Boeing built the 727 for more than twenty years before ending production in 1984, with 1,832 aircraft having been sold—more than any other airliner in history until the 737 broke that record in the early 1990s
The Boeing 727 was designed to fill a need for a short-haul domestic airliner that could profitably serve smaller markets with fewer passengers and runways as short as 4,500 feet. Its three-engine configuration was a compromise between United Airlines, which wanted a four-engine aircraft that could handle hot, high airports, such as Denver’s Stapleton International, and American Airlines, which wanted a twin-engine configuration for efficiency. Meanwhile, Eastern Airlines wanted a three-engine aircraft to enhance operational safety for its over-water Caribbean routes. In the end, the three-engine configuration proved to be the best overall solution for each airline.
When the 727 began to be replaced by the more efficient, twin-engine 737, many of the venerable three-holers found their way into the fleets of freight operators. To boost the performance and maximum gross weight of the 727—and also to address increasingly onerous noise abatement regulations—Valsan Partners developed a conversion that replaced the left and right engines with quieter, more powerful, more fuel-efficient Pratt & Whitney JT8D-217 or JT8D-219 engines, and installed a hush kit to the original center engine, also a JT8D. The result was an aircraft that could cruise 50 mph faster, carry 10,000 more pounds of cargo and use less fuel.
The Boeing 727-100-REW shown here is an excellent example of a private 727. It is currently offered for sale by Avpro, Inc. and features every amenity and modification necessary for safe and comfortable global travel. For optimum performance and efficiency, it features the BF Goodrich/Valspan conversion with -219 engines and a Honeywell EFIS flightdeck. Aft of the cockpit, its 29-passenger layout includes a master suite located in the aft cabin, with a Queen-sized bed, generous closet space and a private bathroom with integrated shower. The forward salon offers additional berthing opportunities, while the a mid-cabin galley supports the preparation of gourmet meals over long flights. The circular lounge located mid-cabin offers the ideal area for visiting, conferences or just watching the world pass outside tinted glass windows fitted with Spragen shades. Fresh C4-C5 inspections and an excellent maintenance history mean this Boeing Super 727-100-REW is ready to become your personal flying carpet.
